How do gh-ost and pt-online-schema-change alter huge MySQL tables without long locks?

Both tools create an empty copy with the new schema, copy rows in chunks, and keep it in sync — triggers for pt-osc, binlog tailing for gh-ost. The final rename swap takes only a brief lock regardless of table size.
